Kedarnath – Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva

Kedarnath is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage destinations in India, located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft). It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and a key shrine of the Char Dham Yatra, attracting devotees and spiritual seekers from across the world.

History of Kedarnath Temple

The history of Kedarnath dates back over 1,000 years, deeply rooted in Hindu mythology.

Mythological Origins

According to legend, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for killing their kin. Shiva avoided them and took the form of a bull (Nandi), hiding in the Garhwal Himalayas. When Bhima tried to catch him, the bull disappeared into the earth.

It is believed that:

  • The hump of the bull appeared at Kedarnath

  • Other body parts emerged at:

    • Tungnath (arms)

    • Rudranath (face)

    • Madhyamaheshwar (navel)

    • Kalpeshwar (hair)

Together, these form the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit.

Historical Construction

  • The present stone temple is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya (8th century CE)

  • Built from massive stone slabs, interlocked without mortar

  • Remarkably survived natural disasters, including the 2013 Uttarakhand floods

Cultural & Spiritual Significance

Kedarnath is not just a temple—it is a symbol of penance, moksha, and spiritual resilience.

Why Kedarnath is Spiritually Important

  • One of the 12 Jyotirlingas, representing Shiva as the supreme cosmic force

  • Part of both Char Dham and Panch Kedar

  • Believed that visiting Kedarnath washes away sins and grants liberation (moksha)

Cultural Traditions

  • Daily rituals include Abhishek, Rudrabhishek, and Maha Aarti

  • During winter, the Utsav Murti is moved to Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath, where worship continues

  • Pilgrimage season reflects a blend of Vedic chants, Garhwali culture, and ascetic traditions

Nearby Places to visit

Other than the Kedarnath Temple, on the eastern side of the town is Bhairavnath Temple, and the deity of this temple, Bhairavnath, is believed to protect the town during the winter months. About 6 km upstream from the town, lies Chorabari Tal, a glacier-lake also called Gandhi Sarovar. Near Kedarnath, there is a cliff called Bhairav Jhamp. Other places of interest include the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, and Rudra meditation cave.
